The Cotopaxi volcano, an almost perfect snow cone that rises to 5,897 meters is unique in the world and is perhaps, next to Galapagos, the greatest symbol of our natural geography, recognized worldwide.
We set off from Quito or from Hacienda El Porvenir for Cotopaxi National Park in the morning, stopping briefly at Hacienda El Porvenir to relax and have a drink. We continue on to the Park (3,600m.) and cross the páramo plains where we will eventually reach the car park (4,500m.) below the climbing hut. From here, we begin to hike up to the hut (or “Refugio” in Spanish) José Ribas at 4,800m. (15,744 ft), and come face-to-face with the imposing, snow-clad Cotopaxi volcano. After descending from the Refugio, we will continue on to Limpiopungo Lake and be served a delicious packed lunch. After lunch, we get back in the vehicle and drive across gorgeous landscapes as far as the Pucará del Salitre, an ancient Inca fortress on the route to the Amazon basin. Then we will return to Quito or back to the Hacienda. (Packed lunch).
